NEXT REEL reads a public Letterboxd profile - every film logged, every star rating, every like and the watchlist - and works out what that person should watch next. Each pick is ranked with a match score, poster and synopsis, and comes with its receipts - the favourites that led to it, the director and which of their films you've already watched and enjoyed, and which of the cast you've loved in other films. A tight junk filter strips out anything already seen, obscure filler, shorts, TV movies, sequels to series you haven't started, and anything that looks like the films you rated badly.
Who it's for: Letterboxd users stuck in the "what do I watch tonight?" scroll who want suggestions built from their own diary, not from whatever's trending.
Letterboxd has no public API, so NEXT REEL reads the same public profile pages any visitor would see, through a small server-side reader (/api/nextreel.php) that caches each profile for a few hours. Film details, posters and credits come from TMDB through the same proxy, which keeps the API key on the server and caches every lookup, so the more people use it the faster it gets.
If a profile is private, or Letterboxd won’t let the server in, people can drop in their Letterboxd data export instead (Settings → Data → Export your data). It’s read in the browser and only the film titles get looked up.

- 2026-10-20 First build. Works for any public Letterboxd username (or an uploaded Letterboxd export for private profiles). Ratings are read relative to each person's own average, low ratings act as things to avoid, and candidates come from TMDB audience recommendations for your favourites plus the back catalogues of directors you rate. Filters for how well known, minimum rating, era, length, language, watchlist and genres, plus a 'Not for me' button per film.
